Notes: This area attended by a Jesuit missionary as early as 1836. In 1850 about 30 German Catholic immigrants organized a congregation; first church 1854. Mt. Carmel is near the state line.

Notes: See rolls 161 (bpt. index) and 162 this series. Attended in 1840s by Father Elisha Durbin, circuit riding priest from Sacred Heart, St. Vincent, KY (see biography). A small orphanage was opened in 1879 and moved to Alton in 1884. New church built in 1882.

(see biography) Short history on first page of marriages says Ponds Settlement aka Waltonboro and Doherty; also that marriages before 1842 are in Sacred Heart church, Union County, KY.

Carmel 1853–61 and 1873–86; no pastor 1861–63 Oldest records probably at St. Francis, Vincennes. Reportedly, the microfilm to 1838 is located at Univ Notre Dame, Burton Collection.

Notes: German Catholics began to populate the area in the 1840s. St. Joseph's was a mission of the Eudist Fathers from Vincennes, Indiana. First resident pastor 1901. School established in 1870.

Situated near the junction of Clay, Richland and Jasper counties. First resident pastor 1882. Book 3 baptisms are very faded on security microfilm.

During 1880s Benedictine monks from Wetaug, Pulaski county, Illinois attended to parish needs. St. Mary was a mission of St. Joseph, Cobden for many years.
